Director's Corner

Summertime in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is in full effect (the rain has actually held off in August) and it could not be a better time to come up and play. Weekly, we are offering lessons in road cycling, kayaking, waterskiing, and shooting sports. Our weekend events have been well attended and we have the Wounded Warriors returning for 3 days at the end of August. I would have to say that our year round adaptive sports and recreational opportunities are here to stay.

Landscaping Donation
One of 19 new trees donated by Mr. Tom AdamsThe New England Disabled Sports and Loon Mountain can breathe easier due to the generous donation of Mr. Tom Adams. The land around the NE Disabled Sports Center got a little facelift with the addition of a Japanese style garden. This garden consists of 19 trees, several types of shrubs, perennials, and annuals. There will also be a new path constructed next to the lunch rock for everyone to enjoy. Mr. Adams, the 2007/8 NE Disabled Sports Volunteer of the Year and retired Landscape Architect, wanted to make sure that the NE Disabled Sports Center was appealing to the eye from the inside to the outside.

Magic in the Mountains: Accessible Stock Car Driving Experience
Written by Rob Mueller and Geoff Krill

Lt. Ian James Brown and the accessible racing stock carRemember the first time you took your father’s car into an empty parking lot and tested her out to see what the family sedan really had under the hood? For 12 disabled athletes that experience was brought to life again through a first of its kind driving event hosted by Accessible Racing, in conjunction with New England Disabled Sports (a chapter of Disabled Sports USA), Loon Mountain and the White Mountain Motorsports Park. The “Magic in the Mountains” accessible stock car driving experience was held June 26, 2009 in Lincoln, New Hampshire. This event allowed newly injured veterans and active disabled athletes to learn defensive driving skills that they employed at the world’s only ‘Arrive & Drive’ stock car driving experience for persons with physical disabilities.
